Exciting Reads! Award-winning Books & Upcoming Nominees

Looking for something exciting to read?  Check out our list of Red Maple nominees (ages 11-15) and White Pine nominees (Grades 9 - 12).  Who knows, you might just be reading a future award-winner!

Sister Wife by Shelley Hrdlitschka, nominated as a White Pine title, tells the story of Celeste, a 15 year old about to be married -- as the 6th wife to her new husband in the community of Unity.  But Celeste is repulsed by the idea of being married to an older man.  And she's not even certain she wants to raise children.  Can she find a way to get out of Unity?  Safely?

Speaking of award-winners, some excellent teen/young adult authors were recently received the following prestigous awards:
The Newbery Medal: When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead
Miranda, a 12 year old girl receives mysterious notes that seem to foretell the future -- including her own.  But will knowing what is to come really prevent it from happening?

The Michael L. Printz Award: Going Bovine by Libba Bray
Sixteen-year old Cameron just wants to get through highschool but is sick with Creutzfeld-Jakob disease, sometimes known as mad-cow disease.  A road trip to Disney World with a fellow hospital resident -- a 16 year old dwarf called Gonzo is the basis of this dark comedy.  A punk-inspired angel Dulcie (with spray-painted wings!) goes along for the ride!
